If a grown adult fervently believes in the tooth fairy or Santa Claus then he or she would rightly be perceived as mad, ignorant or both by most people. Yet the belief in an invisible man in the sky who will torture you for eternity if you don't 'believe' in him is somehow afforded protection from such ridicule. Indeed, I would argue that belief in the tooth fairy or Santa Claus is more rational than belief in any of the major world religions because, at least to the unsuspecting child, both the tooth fairy and Santa leave evidence that they have actually been to your house and left money or presents.

I have a friend who is a Muslim. He is by no means a tee-totaler and I've never seen him pray, but get him started on the subject of religious belief and atheism and there is literally no stopping him as he talks and even shouts over any arguments against religious belief. On one occasion I was talking to my Muslim friend(N_) and another friend of mine(P_) who, through more than one family tragedy, despises religion more than I ever could. Somehow, regrettably, the subject of conversation came round to religious belief and atheism. N_ and P_ got more and more heated as they laid into each other, P_ eventually backed down because more and more onlookers were looking on (this was at a wedding after all). N_ was very pleased with himself for having shouted the loudest and longest. What stung me most was his assertion that scientists were arrogant because they presumed to know everything about the Universe. As far as I am concerned, the unfounded belief that all the answers to the biggest questions in this life lie between the pages of one book (and try to get religionists to agree on which book) is the height of arrogance.

Science does not claim to have all the answers, it is merely our current best explanation for how we think the universe works using the tools of logic and reason. Our scientific understanding of the universe is ever-changing (dare I say, evolving) as we accumulate more and more empirical evidence. People put forth theories that explain our current evidence, predictions are then made from these theories and then evidence to support these predictions is sought. If no evidence is found, or if the evidence indicates that the theory is wrong, the theory is adapted to accommodate the new evidence, or it is thrown out to be replaced by an alternative theory. Science evolves by people challenging the current paradigm and finding evidence to change it.

Most religions say the opposite. They state that the answers are revealed to us by gods and angels and we are to believe, without question, the answers that we are given. This is Dogma, unquestioning belief in revealed 'facts'. God gave you a brain, but obviously he didn't intend for you to use it. The world-view of the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) probably made sense to the bronze-age goat-herders who first made it all up, but in todays world, where we know the world is not flat, the stars are not holes in the sky where the rain comes in, that life is billions of years old and the Universe itself is billions of years older still - frankly it's embarrassing.

Back to the diagram. In a nutshell - Christian dogma during the Dark ages in Europe effectively stifled scientific inquiry for over a thousand years. Perhaps the greatest 'sin' carried out by the church was the ban on the dissection of cadavers that held back medicine and biology for a millenium. The power of the church even led to a regression in our scientific understanding of the world and in our use of technology. It was only with the coming of the enlightenment and the rediscovery of 'heretical' Greek and Roman texts that Europeans could claim they had surpassed the Roman's, who's civilisation had collapsed a thousand years previously.

Now it's corporate greed causing a dark age of sorts. Look at our use of oil, electricity, disposeable anything or just money in general. Corporations hold back revolutionary breakthroughs in the name of making profit for the share holders. Why have we been stuck using petroleum and coal as our primary sources of energy? Profit and greed. Why do items wear out quickly? Why does every household item require us to purchase electricity to run them when Tesla had a tower in Colorado Springs supplying free electricity for everyone? Why do we still cut down forests for wood when we know hemp makes for better paper products. Hemp can also be used for replacing petroleum based fuels as well? Again it's corporate profit and greed the new religion causing Americans to lose rights, lives and money. Yes Christianity set humanity back and that should have taught us to not allow that to happen again. But has it done so?

The only problem is attributing the dark ages to Christianity, when there is ample evidence from tree growth rings, etc. that the Dark ages are spawned by a literal Dark Age due to atmospheric dust from a volcano, Krakatoa, in 535 AD.

Tree rings didn't show normal growth for fifteen years. There were seven years of crop failures. This screwed up the ancient world

See this summary of a PBS science special on this very topic.

http://www.hbci.com/~wenonah/history/535ad.htm

Which has lots of links to plenty of other scientific articles on the subject.

Basically a small planetary disaster set mankind back for a thousand years due to the radical political instability that was introduced.

Christian dogma was a reaction to this decline, not a cause.

Hear hear. Religion deserves nothing but ridicule. Invisible sky-goblins indeed ...

I think the problem is not that religion is evil, in fact, I am religious myself. The problem is that if religion is used as answer to "how" and not to "why". Religion is trying to offer an answer to a question that can't scientifically be answered: What is the sense of life?
As for science, I don't believe in creationism, and I don't believe that the bible should be taken literally. Explanations should be left to science in that area, simply because it is proven and true.
I do however, believe, that forcing not being religious on people is wrong. I also believe forcing religion on people is bad, as the diagram above nicely proves.

Facts and fiction: To many witnesses that saw Jesus Christ do the miracles, die and then resurrect and live again.
How about before Christ came to earth progress in technology and inventions were at a gradual rise. When Christ came to earth there was an increase and when he was killed and his associates within a hundred years after his death were killed off. The dark ages began, middle ages, mid evil ages began. It all makes sense here we have the Son of God among us and they kill him anyone with his power and athority. So there we have it the world was left on it's own with any communication from heaven do to no one wanting to listen to heaven anyway.
Once a land was chosen to be able to worship how where or what they may was provided such as America then and only then when the renisance began freedom to worship and this is when the technology and inventions began to rise again. Actually the renisance began in England and move to the USA. Freedom to worship is the key to all this. Check this out. The Roman govt is who had Christ killed and and isn't interesting that a church was named after the govt that had Jesus killed. If you can't beat them join them or take complete control of them or the church. So there you have it. All Christianity stems from the Catholic church. The bible was in the Catholic church to believe the way they wanted. All Christian churches protest the catholic church that's why they call them protestant churches because they protest what they believe. So the dark ages are dark for a reason. The Heavens are closed do to man killing the true deciples off the earth with any athority to carry on the truth and the power of God to perform the sacred ordiances such as baptism and the athority to give the Holy Ghost. The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored it's here all the truth and athortiy from Heaven to perform the saving ordainces. There's even more witnesses that God and Jesus live and the Heavens are open again.
Let go back to investion and technology. Since The Church of Jesus Christ has been Restored in 1830 with the same ministry the Jesus Christ had technology has been going sky high. Isn't is great what can happen when the heaves are open?

Facts or Fiction: True stands alone because truth is facts. Fiction is science and science is forever changing. What is true in science today will be fiction tomorrow always changing. What is fact and true today will forever to true and facts tomorrow. The fact is God and Jesus Christ are real and alive and well and they have their kingdon right here on earth now all anyone has to do is go out and find it. Isn't America great how we can express our thoughts freely.
